Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!” (NLT)
Some might think Jesus is guilty of breathtaking arrogance. If we want access or relationship to God then he is the only way. None of this business about all religions being the same and there being many paths to the one common destination.
Then again, “arrogance” is not something we associate with Jesus. So many of his followers believe he is simply stating a truth, uncomfortable though that might be in an age of relativism. He is stating an absolute truths and people today don’t believe in them (of course their unbelief itself thus takes the form of an absolute truth!).
But we can say more. Jesus is the only one who makes relating to God possible, but we recognise there are many who seek God who have never heard of Jesus, who lived before Jesus. Such people cry out to God for mercy and God being who he is offers them mercy. Jesus is the expression of that mercy. He is the only way God can bring people to himself even though there will be some who are not conscious of him doing so.
Jesus makes it possible for a merciful God to show mercy to all.
