Words like this seem to suggest that when troubles come, God’s people will soar high above them. Clouds and storms may be in the sky, but believers can be sure of a serene, unruffled journey in the calm blue skies above.

If only this were true! There is enough in the Scriptures to remind us that we are not immune from difficulties. Misfortune and evil strike at all irrespective of faith. Jesus himself said that we would have joy and trouble in this life. So, what about these wings of eagles?

Those who know a bit about eagles tell us that when an eagle strikes airborne turbulence, it tilts its wings in such a way as to handle the buffeting. It is not a case of completely avoiding the troublesome currents, rather a case of adapting to them in such a way as to safely get through them.

So it is with our faith response to troubles. While sometimes we may in fact soar above them, more usually we have to go through them. We “tilt our wings”, applying our faith in a faithful God to the threat that presents itself. We get the right perspective, which essentially means focussing on the power of God rather than the power of immediate circumstances.

It may be that we can rise above the storms. It may be that we can wisely steer around the storms. But chances are that at some stage we have to go through them with a wise tilting of our wings of faith.

Blessings

David
