John 1:1-5

At the beginning God expressed himself. That personal expression, that word, was with God, and was God, and he existed with God from the beginning. All creation took place through him, and none took place without him. In him appeared life and this life was the light of mankind. The light still shines in the darkness and the darkness has never put it out. (JBP)

Let’s never forget that Jesus didn’t just come into being on the first Christmas. In some not quite definable way he has always existed. He was present at the creation and was instrumental in it. God has never been a solo operator.

But our text goes on to say that this Jesus didn’t stay in the safety and glory of the heavens. He came to earth. God took human form in a way that Jesus can be seen as God expressing himself in a language and a way that we humans can understand.

And this Jesus was the light of the world. Our world has turned against God, asserting its independence from him. And so it is seen as being in spiritual darkness however advanced and enlightened it claims to be. Jesus shone the light of the truth of God into our world.

We know the result of that. Darkness hated the light and sought to put it out on a Roman cross. But light triumphs over darkness. Jesus might be scorned or rejected or ignored, but his light shines on. Darkness may be winning the battle, but light will win the war.

Blessings
