‘Gamble Responsibly’ Just Doesn’t Work On Problem Gamblers

Governments have long used the “Gamble responsibly” message to target problem gamblers. New research from ANU’s, Centre for Gambling Research, shows that the strategy just doesn’t work.  It turns out, problem gamblers don’t think they have a problem. Dr Marisa Fogarty explained the research on Open House.

Australia Won’t Sign the UN Migration Agreement It Helped Draft

Despite Australia being involved at a Government level in negotiating UN global refugee and migration compacts, Minister for Home Affairs,  Immigration and Border Protection,  Peter Dutton is now saying Australia won’t be signing because it would be “a surrender of our sovereignty”. Carolina Gottardo, Director of Jesuit Refugee Services Australia, was at the UN as the agreements were being finalised and is disturbed by the possibility Australia won’t sign. 

Vital Mental Health Support for Young People Leaving Foster Care

Young people in foster care often faced traumatic and difficult circumstances throughout childhood. When they leave care at age 18, they have to find accommodation and support themselves financially and are at high risk for mental illness. Foster Care Angels have a new online education program to provide mental health education and support for these disadvantaged and vulnerable young people.

The 2018 Global Slavery Index has been released at the UN this week. Jacqueline Juodo Larsen, head of research for the project told Stephen O’Doherty on Open House that data highlights the truly global nature of forced labour, forced marriage and forced sexual exploitation, and the role many rich countries play in exploiting the most vulnerable.
