Leila and Danny Abdallah, the parents of three children who were killed alongside one of their cousins by an intoxicated driver in Sydney’s West, are celebrating this year as they announce they are expecting a child.
Almost two years since tragedy struck, Danny told Hope 103.2, “In the first trimester, I didn’t want to get to get too excited”.
“But now more than halfway [along], I’ve had six kids, but it feels like I’ve got my first child again,” he said.
“We’re thrilled,” – Danny Abdallah
Danny said he and wife Leila had been planning to have more children, but “we left it in God’s hands”.
“We’re just trying to lead by example for our kids about resilience,” he said.
“You know, things in life happen and you’ve just got to keep moving forward.”
The impending arrival of their new baby is something Danny said does give them reason to focus on the future, but acknowledges it won’t ever displace their grief.
“We’ll never forget our children. Leila and I, we grieve everyday. Our hearts are broken,” Danny said.
“But it doesn’t give us an excuse to not make my other kids happy and build a happy home.

“We’re entitled to make it worse for ourselves, but we try not to.”
Danny said the children are “so excited” to have a sibling on the way.
“I asked them what they want for Christmas and every single one of them said ‘I want to get baby shoes, I want to get baby clothes’. They’re very selfless like that.”
As the family shares in this joy, Danny said they also continue to find hope in the faith that “has kept us going” since the accident.
“Our faith comes first,” Danny said. “We know we’ll see our kids again.”
