Vinnies Volunteers Needed in Liverpool Region 

From providing food hampers, financial assistance and housing support, Vinnies have been on the frontlines for decades, helping the poor, homeless and disadvantaged. But to continue their incredible work, Vinnies are in desperate need of volunteer members, especially in the Liverpool region.

Peter Brown, president of Vinnies Kingsgrove, Bankstown and Liverpool regions, spoke to Hope Drive about what being a Vinnies member involves and the impact on those in the community.

What do members do?

“The Welfare Office receives and coordinates calls and requests from people in the community who are in need of assistance,” Peter said.

Requests are then assigned to a pair of Vinnies members, who visit clients in their homes to discuss their situation and identify ways Vinnies can help. These may include food assistance, financial assistance, family support or information about benefits they are entitled to. Sometimes, clients are referred to agencies for specialist advice.

What is required?

On average, members spend one to two hours a week on visitations. Vinnies are aware that members may have their own jobs or personal needs to contend with.

All training is provided on the job, and people with all kinds of life experiences are encouraged to apply.

“Quite often, [people just need] a friendly ear,” Peter said.
