Christian woman sentenced to death in Sudan

A pregnant doctor in Sudan has been sentenced to death for refusing to renounce her Christian faith in court.

Since February 17, Meriam Yehya Ibrahim has been detained in a women’s prison on charges of adultery and apostasy – a charge of ‘leaving her Islamic faith’ even though she was brought up a Christian and is married to a Christian man. 

Her 20-month-old son is also with her in prison as they consider the child a Muslim and will not allow his Christian father to care for him. 

On April 30, she was convicted and given three days to recant her Christian faith, but she refused despite the pressure on her to do so in court.

“Muslim scholars would’ve tried to convince her to change her mind and ‘return’ to Islam,” Jo, Communications Manager from Open Doors Australia says. “The sentence would’ve been considerably lighter if she renounced her faith.”

The international community has started to respond, calling her sentence ‘unimaginable’ with several embassies calling on the Sudanese government to intervene and protect the right to freedom of religion.
