In an ideal world over the Christmas break your only responsibilities should be to eat food, celebrate Jesus, and watch movies non-stop (ok, ‘in moderation’). If you get a chance to indulge in some cinema time, there’s plenty of great ones for your holiday viewing pleasure.

Ferdinand

Ferdinand

For kids (and any other animated film fanatics), Ferdinand is a heart-warming story about a bull who prefers flowers to fighting, proving you can’t judge a book by its cover. Based on the 1936 classic The Story of Ferdinand, this movie is a go-to for a relaxed afternoon with the family full of G-rated laughs.

Paddington 2

Paddington 2

Now your favourite cheeky bear has settled in with the Brown family he has to find new ways to share marmalade and mischief. Looking for the perfect gift for his Aunt’s 100th Birthday, Paddington spots the winning item, only to have it stolen. Don’t expect anything groundbreaking, but do expect your kids to want a cuddly bear of their own.

Jumanji

Jumanji

Pretend you’re not old enough to remember the original now. Jumanji will be one your teens enjoy over the break. In this new adventure, four friends discover an old gaming console (yep, the board games are gone), and they’re drawn into its jungle setting in the form of their adult avatars. It can’t compare with Robin Williams and the ‘real’ Jumanji, but on a hot day when you need as an escape, it’ll do all right.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

The battle between The First Order and the Republic continues in the next Star Wars saga. Join Rey ask she seeks to be mentored in the ways of the Force by Luke Skywalker. Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be a family favourite this summer.

Boxing Day Movie Releases

Now for Boxing Day. The day where a movie is must. Scratch out any and all other plans from your diary, or give me your phone and I’ll do it.

The Greatest Showman

The Greatest Showman

You already know this one’s going to be a tearjerker because I’ve already welled up watching the trailer. Starring Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron and Michelle Williams, The Greatest Showman tells the story of PT Barnum, a down-and-out visionary who rose from nothing to create a show that became a worldwide sensation. Cue epic soundtrack.

Coco

Coco

Coco introduces us to young aspiring musician Miguel. Despite his family’s ban on music, Miguel wants to prove his talent and finds himself in the stunning and colourful Land of the Dead. No doubt there’s some fun to be had with this one, but bear in mind its set in a world of skeletons and Halloween-like surrounds. On a side note, to appeal to audiences of the rushed and relaxed variety, Coco can be viewed with or without ‘Olaf’s Frozen Adventure’ so make sure you check with your local cinema and see if you’ve got extra time to go the candy bar.

Downsizing

Downsizing

Right on trend with de-cluttering and living a minimal life, Matt Damon becomes a miniature version of himself in this social satire. Tackling issues of over-population and how we can look after the world and ourselves a little better (…get it?), Downsizing is both funny and thought-provoking.

Pitch Perfect 3

Pitch Perfect 3

Ok, this doesn’t come out until January 3, but for those that get a break that goes past New Year, add it to your list. Following their win at the World Championship, singing superstars the Bella’s have decided to take on one last challenge against their new foes: singers with INSTRUMENTS #stepback. You better believe it’ll be amazing.

After you’ve watched all these, pull out your fat pants (or shorts because ain’t nobody got time for that summer sweat fest), and watch Home Alone, Elf, and A Mum for Christmas. It’s time to reminisce. Have fun!
