The knocking at the door

Read Revelation 3:20

“Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door,I will come in,and we will share a meal together as friends. (NLT)

When we hear a knock on the door,our first thought might be to wonder who is selling what to us. Some knocks on the door are intrusive,meal-time marketing exercises. Then again,a knock on the door can mean a friend has turned up: pleasant times are in store.

When Jesus comes knocking at our door,it is not a bit of door-to-door selling on his part. Though he is trying to get us to take hold of something. He is wanting us to embrace his companionship. He is not knocking on the door in order to have a chat on the front porch. He wants to have a meal,metaphorically speaking. This means deep and significant friendship.

This verse has often been used to encourage those not yet Christians to invite Jesus to be Lord and Saviour. However,in its context it is speaking to Christians who need a bit of refreshing,who need to enliven their faith so it really matters. Jesus wants to come in to musty,grey Christian lives and shed some light and joy into such lives.

If this is to happen,we must first hear his knocking: that is,be attentive to his ongoing desire to shape our lives. And then we must open the door: that is,be willing to let him come in and shape our lives. He won’t barge in uninvited. We may keep the door shut and continue in our gloomy or proud isolation. Or we may open the door and in doing so open our lives to a release of new life and new hope.
