It seems for every life stage and demographic, there is a dedicated Bible or devotional booklet.

You can find Bibles designed especially for men, women, girls and boys, teens and seniors, and devotions for entrepreneurs, soldiers, truckers and teachers.

But until recently, there was never a Biblical resource for people with dementia.

That’s why the eldercare charity, Hammondcare, developed the Faith for Life series – a collection of faith resources, developed after years of research and consultation with people living with dementia, and their families and carers.

The simple, interactive booklets have titles like Jesus Loves Me, God is so Good, and Yesterday, Today and Forever, and include Bible readings, simple discussion points, lyrics of memorable hymns, and prayers to pray.

Two new resources have been added to the collection in the lead-up to Christmas: – Joy to the World, with a simple, clear presentation of the story of Jesus’ birth, and He Restores my Soul, a series of interactive, comforting devotions based on the Psalms.

HammondCare’s head of pastoral care, Reverend Andrew Nixon, said the research shows that people seek spiritual things more as they get older—and that it’s vital to address not only the physical and mental wellbeing of seniors, but their spiritual needs, too.

Faith for Life is a remarkable set of resources,” he said. “It both lowers the bar to enable literally anyone to provide spiritual care to someone living with dementia, and at the same time raises the bar on what is possible during such engagements.

“Whether a person is relatively new to Christianity or has a lifetime of faith and tradition, we want to help people continue to engage with the Bible in a meaningful way.”

For Dr Greg Clarke, CEO of Bible Society Australia, the resources mean a great deal; not only because the Bible Society collaborated on the project, but because it also impacts on his own family.

“This project became personal for me, as my father was diagnosed with dementia while we were working on it,” he said. “I’m delighted that Bible Society and HammondCare can work together here to champion the Bible and share the love of Jesus.

“We believe the Bible is for everyone, and we prioritise people who have to struggle to access it.”

The two new titles in the Faith for Life series will be launched at St Matthews Anglican Church at West Pennant Hills on November 29, at an event from 9.30am to midday.
