Enlist Jesus’ Help

Sinking times are praying times with the Lord’s servants.

As appears from Matthew 14:2-30, Peter neglected prayer when he stepped out of a boat to walk on water towards Jesus.

When he began to sink, his danger made him a suppliant.

Although late, his cry was not too late.

In our hours of bodily pain or mental anguish, we find ourselves as naturally driven to prayer as the wreck is driven upon the shore by the waves.

Heaven’s great harbour of refuge is prayer; thousands of weather-beaten vessels have found a haven there.

Whether we are in the head winds or calm waters of life, short prayers are long enough.

There were three words in the petition which Peter gasped out – “Lord, save me.” (Matthew 14:30)

Only three words but they were sufficient for his purpose.

Not length but strength is desirable.

A sense of need is a mighty teacher of brevity.

Rather than a long address, a real prayer might be simply uttered in a petition as short as that of Peter.

Immediately, a keen sense of danger forces an anxious cry from us that the ear of Jesus hears.

With him, ear and heart go together, and the hand does not long linger.

Eli’s Reflection: Sometimes we can view prayer as work where big words and a lot of time is required. Here, we are reminded that short prayers are long enough.
