Good morning. Here to help you start your day right. And the way we do that every morning is by starting our day with some time with God.

I hope that you’ll begin with this brief time we have together, but that your personal time with God will continue after this as you respond to what God is saying to you and have some time of prayer about your life and about your day, about your relationship with God.

We’re talking this week about the topic, a Godly response to exhaustion. Now we saw yesterday that just taking some time out, some time off, stopping to rest physically, to get sleep and to rebuild is actually a Godly response to exhaustion. It’s something that God built into His plan for how we should live as He established the Sabbath day as a day of rest.

Spiritual Rest

Today I want us to notice that not only do we need to rest physically, but there is a spiritual rest that we should be pursuing too. In Psalm 37 verse 7, it says Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him. Do not fret because of Him who prospers in his way, because of the man who carries out wicked schemes. Cease from anger and forsake wrath. Do not fret. It leads only to evil doing.

Over in Psalm 116:7, it says, Return to your rest, O my soul, for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.

And really this idea is brought together by Jesus Christ. When He said to us, come to me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you shall find rest for your souls, for my yoke is easy and my load is light.

Have you discovered that place of inner rest in your life?

You know, I believe that many of us come to the place of exhaustion in our lives because we have not discovered this idea of spiritual rest. Some people refer to it as the rest of faith.

And really it’s the idea that God enables you to do what He calls you to do. And if you’re in the middle of a bunch of busyness and activities, and you feel like this is the place God has you in life, or it’s just the way things are and there’s no way to change it. Then you need to trust that what God calls you to, He also enables you to do.

And that you can rest in God’s ability. God will always enable you to do what He calls you to do.

And that it’s not up to you to somehow manufacture life the way that God intends for you to live it. It’s up to God as you make yourself available to Him. He wants to live His life in you and through you. That doesn’t mean you trying harder to live His way of life. It means you allowing Him to be the leader of your life.

To take that lead role and to walk with you and in you and through you to accomplish the life that He wants you to live.

As someone has put it, to run and work, the law commands, but gives me neither feet nor hands. But better news the gospel brings, it bids me fly and gives me wings.

Have you learned to come to God with your schedule, your busyness, your exhaustion? And give it to Him. And rest in Him.
