Listen: Emma Wyndham Chalmers and Hattie Steenholdt talk to Ben McEachen about environmental concern and younger Christians

They Shall Inherit the Earth is a new report released by Christian aid agency Tearfund Australia.

Assisted by NCLS Research, Tearfund said the report is the most comprehensive of its kind. They Shall Inherit the Earth surveys the views of Millennial and adult Gen Z Christians and church leaders in Australia towards climate change. It also revealed how they believe churches and Christian organisations should respond.

Tearfund’s Advocacy, Strategy and Project Manager Emma Wyndham Chalmers spoke with Hope Afternoons about the report. She was joined by Hattie Steenholdt, a university student from Melbourne who participated in the report and also lived through the intense bushfires at Mallacoota in the summer of 2019-2020.

The key findings include more than three in five young Christians are very or extremely concerned about climate change.

Emma shared that some of the key findings include more than three in five young Christians are very or extremely concerned about climate change. Also, two thirds of young Christians want their local church to lead the way in taking action to address it. Further, They Shall Inherit the Earth examined how climate change – and care for the environment – fit within an understanding of the gospel, the Church’s mission and what it means to live out Christian faith.
