Unfortunately we live in a society when it’s easy to ask “who really cares anymore?”. In the old days, neighbours looked out for each other, and people generally liked to connect with each other, having a talk over the back fence, or inviting them inside for morning tea. But times have changed, we tend to keep to ourselves, we mind our own business, and find ways to connect. As a result there are deep fears and doubts, and in many cases crippling anxiety.

But unfortunately in our time there is isolation, and the result is deep loneliness. Who will really connect with me? Who has the time anymore to listen to what I’m saying? Welfare and charity groups do care about people. Your local Minister or priest does care. They give of themselves and offer services to the individual, the couple, or family. I think silently we yearn to have someone, at least 1 person, who will take the time to care about us, someone who will understand. It’s very much like David who wrote Psalm 142, I look to the right and watch, but there is none who takes notice of me; no refuge remains to me, no man cares for me. (Psalm 142:4). Another version of that Bible verse says “you won’t see anyone who cares enough to walk beside me” (CEV) . With all the sophistication of our age, the truth is many ask “who cares?”

So, is there, then, anyone who cares? Is there perhaps someone beyond the world who cares? Is there  even anybody out there? Yes, there is. He, the great infinite God of the universe, is aware of the individual. I’ve heard people say “God wouldn’t be concerned about me – He’s got more important things to do than worry about me and my small world” ”. But that’s not what the Bible says.

When we look at the Bible we find scriptures that tell us that God is interested in all the details of our lives, as He even knows the number of hairs on our heads.

In the book of Psalms, God counts the stars and calls them all by name.

In the book of Mark we see Jesus, in the midst of a huge crowd, interested in the woman who was bleeding, as she only “touched his cloak”, and He noticed her.

Scripture tells us that God cares about all things, and is not a God that loves us from afar. He is a God who cares about the details of our lives. Nothing is too small to present to Him, and nothing escapes His attention. I would encourage each of you to go to God with all the little things in your life, not just the big things. God is concerned with the details of your life, even the small issues that may be causing you problems. God is a personal God, and cares about you and loves you. He loves you so much that He gave His only son to suffer and die on the cross so that you can be saved and have an eternal life.

Jesus Christ–once asked, “what will you gain, if you own the whole world but destroy yourself?” (Mark 8: 36). He plainly implies, in other words, that the soul of one man out-values the combined worth of all the world’s treasures. Another day He asked “Aren’t two sparrows sold only for a cent? But your Father knows when any one of them falls to the ground. Even the hairs on your head are counted. So don’t be afraid. You are worth much more than many sparrows”. (Matthew 10: 29-31).

GOD CARES ABOUT THE LITTLE THINGS IN LIFE. We say ‘little things mean a lot”, but do we really believe that? There’s this story in John 21 (v4-9)

“Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realise that it was Jesus. He called out to them, ‘Friends, haven’t you any fish?’  ‘No,’ they answered.  He said, ‘Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.’  When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.  Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord!’  As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, ‘It is the Lord,’ he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.  The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from  shore, about a hundred yards.  When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.”

Sometimes we think God only cares about the big things. Yet, God has shown time and time again that He cares about the little things, like breakfast. Picture this: The Son of God, the One by whom everything was made (Colossians 1:16) on a beach making breakfast for a bunch of tired, smelly fishermen, men that He knew and loved. It is such a small thing, but such a BIG thing given that it is God who is doing the cooking.  And it made an impact because John chose to record it in his biography of Jesus.  The man who was known for His extraordinary teaching, for His powerful miracles, and for His death and resurrection, is also remembered for His fresh fish and bread breakfast!

This tells me something about Jesus: He cares deeply about each of us and at His core is the nature of a servant.  My needs, even the smallest ones, are important to Him.

“And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” Matthew 10:30

Today as you go about your day, think of Jesus on that beach making breakfast and remember how much He cares about your needs, even the smallest ones.  What a wonderful God we serve!
