Psalm 25:8-10

The Lord is good and does what is right;
    he shows the proper path to those who go astray.
He leads the humble in doing right,
    teaching them his way.
The Lord leads with unfailing love and faithfulness
    all who keep his covenant and obey his demands. (NLT)

We often hear the lament that we don’t know what God wants us to do. We already know he doesn’t want us to commit adultery, that he wants us to forgive our enemies, that he wants us to study the Scriptures and pray. But sometimes the decisions which face us are not that clear. There is no clear biblical command involved.

First thing to realise is that God does not lay down a detailed blueprint for every happening in our life. We can even dare to say he doesn’t have an opinion on many things we have to decide. He invites us to choose what seems best. His general purpose for us is to be more like Jesus and to live out his rule in his world. Whatever advances that is fine by him. So he may not guide you into being a teacher rather than a builder, but he sure wants you to be a godly teacher or a godly builder.

Second thing to realise is that if God truly does have a specific plan for us, if he does want us to decide one particular way, we need humility to recognise and accept his direction. He is only able to steer the rudder of our lives if we let him take hold of it. Our stubbornly clinging to it means we can’t take his offer of help.

Of course we can pray for guidance, but be aware that God often leaves decisions to us. If we commit our ways in general to him, we can trust him to offer any specific guidance that is needed. And remember, don’t just pray for guidance. Pray to be the sort of person who can be guided.

Blessings
