The Human Ache — A LifeWords Devotion

Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely. (NLT)

Those who follow Jesus are caught up in the tension between two realities. One is our present world. We are called on to value it and care for it. We are called on to live out and seek to extend the rule of God in that world. We are warned against merely conforming to this world but rather are to be agents of transformation.

Then again, we are aware of the future reality of the new heavens and the new earth. Aware that one day all that is wrong and ugly and misshapen in this world will be removed and things will be put right again by Jesus who is the rightful ruler of this world.

This explains why we ache, why we lack perfect fulfilment. The ache can be covered up by lots of frantic activity in good causes, or seen as a sign of immaturity to be wiped out by confession and repentance. The ache can also be merely ignored.

But such an aching soul is not evidence of neurosis or immaturity, but a sign that we haven’t as yet reached our goal. We were made for something more than what we have now. A hunger for heaven is not sinful, it is merely human.
