In face of all this, what is there left to say? If God is for us, who can be against us? He that did not hesitate to spare his own Son but gave him up for us all—can we not trust such a God to give us, with him, everything else that we can need? (PHILLIPS)

We so often worry about whether God can really provide for us. Whether he can sustain us in hardship, whether he will stick with us even as we fail to stick with him. We may come to wonder if the creator of the universe who flung stars into space is all that bothered about our relatively trivial life situations.

Verses like this answer those questions and doubts. Paul uses a certain logic to establish God’s faithfulness. He has sent Jesus to take on himself all that kept us estranged from him, all the ugly load of guilt, all the pervasive power of sin. He resolved the truly biggest problem we had. He gave us membership of his family, forgiveness of sins, eternal life.

Seeing that he has done all that, surely he can be trusted to look after us. If he has done the primary thing, can we not rely on him to do the secondary things? This is why we need to constantly go back to the cross to reassure ourselves of God’s care for us. The sheer wonder of creation may assure us of God’s power, but it is the cross which is the clearest demonstration of his love.

The cross shows how he has dealt with the big thing. In the light of that, little things can be safely entrusted to him. I am accepted, I am loved. Jesus proves it.

Blessings,

David
