Psalm 98:1-3

          Sing a new song to the Lord,
             for he has done wonderful deeds.
          His right hand has won a mighty victory;
             his holy arm has shown his saving power!
          The Lord has announced his victory
             and has revealed his righteousness to every nation!
          He has remembered his promise to love and be faithful to Israel.
             The ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. (NLT)

Our lives are a succession of songs, of seasons. The Psalmist wants us to consider what new song we will sing, what new expressions of faith will characterise our life. He is not talking literally about introducing a new song in our church gatherings. Or adapting a new tune to an old piece of music. His theme is much broader.

Our new song may mean a change of church or ministry within a church. It could mean a new friendship, a new job, a new voluntary activity. It might be more of an internal decision to let go of certain ambitions in order to take hold of new ones. It might be a move beyond our comfort zones into some new initiative which is as yet unknown.

What we do know is that our life is marked with change. One year is not exactly like another year. We dare not stay safely paddling in the shallows whilst the vast deep ocean of life and faith invites us to plunge into it.

While this might take some courage, the Psalmist reminds us that the reason we sing a new song, take a new path, is because God is always good and faithful. We can boldly and eagerly embrace change because God never changes.

Blessings
David
