God blesses those who work for peace,
for they will be called the children of God. (NLT)
Those who work for peace are often in strife. Those who work for peace are not always “nice” or inoffensive people. Peacemakers are not walking, talking fire blankets smothering the oxygen of conflict. Peacemakers stare conflict and war in the face and seek to do something about it.
Which is how God makes peace with humankind. He calls a sin a sin and offers peace for those who embrace how he made peace, which is through Jesus taking away our guilt. Peacemaking is costly. Peacemakers are not starry eyed idealists who simply want to harness whatever is good in human beings. They accept the imperfections of human beings.
All that considered, we are to be peacemakers. Those who point others to how they can have peace with their Creator. Those who seek to help others live and work in harmony with one another. Those who try to make their homes and workplaces and other gatherings better places to be because they are not disruptive influences.
We know that just one egocentric, disgruntled person can poison any gathering of people. They stir up trouble, they plot and conspire so as to encourage unhealthy rivalry. Peacemakers don’t exploit human weakness or imperfection. They simply don’t let it be the last word. That is why they are called children of God: they resemble their father.
