“Don’t worry at all then about tomorrow. Tomorrow can take care of itself! One day’s trouble is enough for one day.” (JBP)
We very rarely worry about the present moment. We either rake up past issues and let them bother us or speculate about future issues and thus let the possibilities of tomorrow obscure the certainties of today.
Worrying about the future affects us all. But when we do so, we are worrying about something that does not exist. The future is as yet an unformed reality. All sorts of things may happen or could happen, but we can’t be sure they will happen. So repeatedly rehearsing all those possibilities is at least a waste of time and at most the forfeiting of today’s pleasures by focussing on tomorrow’s possibilities.
Of course we appropriately think about the future and make plans. Anxiety intrudes when we play the ‘what if’ game and start imagining the worst. Prayerful commitment of the future to God is healthy, as is wise preparation where appropriate. But going over and over possibilities which cause us to be fearful is neither wise nor helpful. Our worrying won’t make any difference to the future whereas our prayerful planning might be beneficial.
The God who has been with us yesterday and who is with us today will be there with us in the as yet unnamed future. As the old saying goes, today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.
Blessings
David
