He wrote many hit songs, but his personal life ended in a tragic way with alcoholism and other sad issues which affected him. But he will be remembered for the wonderful way of singing and the words, like one song called “Men with broken hearts”. He could well have been talking about himself:
You’ll meet many just like me upon life’s busy street
With shoulders stooped and heads bowed low and eyes that stare in defeat
Poor souls that live within the past where sorrow plays all parts
Where a living death is all that’s left for men with broken hearts
You have no right to be the judge to criticize and condemn
Just think but for the grace of God it would be you instead of him
One careless step a thoughtless deed and then the misery starts
And to those who weep death comes cheap these men with broken hearts
“He [God] heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 14&:3 – NIV)
Oh so humble you should be when they come passing by
For it’s written that the greatest men never get too big to cry
Some lose faith in love and life when sorrow shoots her darts
And with hope all gone they walk alone these men with broken hearts
You’ve never walked in that man’s shoes or saw things through his eyes
Or stood and watched with helpless hands while the heart inside you dies
Some were paupers some were kings and some were masters of the arts
But in their shame they’re all the same these men with broken hearts
Life sometimes can be so cruel that a heart will pray for death
God why must these living dead know pain with every breath
So help your brother along the road no matter where he starts
For the God that made you made them too these men with broken hearts.
Our Unseen Hearts
If I were to ask you whether your heart was ever broken I am confident many would say, Unfortunately yes. We are human beings and we are prone to get hurt, sometimes so badly especially by those whom we trust and love. Our heart is the most fragile and precious commodity that we possess, both at a physical level and spiritual level. We know that any damage to the heart signifies the end of life, but with early diagnosis and timely intervention we can help prevent or even cure a physical heart.

How about the unseen heart? It is much harder to deal with because the pain of a broken heart can remain for the rest of our lives unless it is properly healed. It’s not just women whose hearts are broken—men also have broken hearts. Women will generally cry, but us guys express how we feel in different ways, often not well. Many men will repress their emotions if they are not comfortable crying at the risk of being seen as weak or less masculine.
Repressed emotions may keep you in a state of sadness for an even further period of time. I wonder why so many men drink heavily—is it to dull the inner pain of memories, or guilt, or of past events that have never been reconciled? It could be the result of a broken heart.
Ways to Soothe Our Pain
We are told to:
- Find a way to express how you feel: There are many ways that you can express your feelings, which can help relieve the heartbreak.
- Find support in your family and friends: Let them know how you feel and ask them for advice and guidance on how to deal with the heartbreak. Only talk to friends who care and have been known to show support in previous situations.
- Take sometime to enjoy your life: Rather than obsessing over how you felt before the heartbreak, make it a goal to find other ways that can help refill joy in your life. Watching a movie, eating at a fine restaurant or meeting up with friends can help you refocus on the positive things going on in your life.
- Learn from the heartbreak: Find out what was the cause of the heartbreak and what you could have done differently to help prevent another heartbreak from happening. Becoming aware of the mistakes that were made will make you alert of them in your future relationships.
And remember what God says in Psalm 147:3: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Thank you, Lord; that’s the message we want to hear today.
