The Bible has sometimes been called God’s love message to us. There is some truth in that, even though the Bible itself is at times a complex piece of literature that might cause us to scratch our heads in puzzlement rather than get all warm and fuzzy inside.

There can be no doubt that the Bible is the foundational means by which He communicates to us. If that is so, we do well to take it very seriously. If anyone writes to us conveying life and death information, we dare not dismiss it or read it in a superficial way. We want to get to the heart of what it is all about.

And if we regard it as in any way conveying a message of love and grace to us, we must not be content with a quick look, or an occasional glance. This would be to miss out on the love and miss out on any proper response to that love.

Lovers savour the words of love letters. They do not just read them to get facts and information, but read them to sense something of the heartbeat of the one who writes to them. We certainly need to understand the information conveyed, but just as certainly need to grasp the heart of the one doing the conveying.

It might not be enough to read the Bible often, or read lots of the Bible. We may not so much need to do more reading, as deeper reading.
