We look at ourselves and think, What is wrong with me? Is there some part of my life that’s missing? A bit like the jigsaw puzzle where you’ve lost some of the pieces. It also takes a fair bit of courage to look at ourselves in that way. I also quoted from the New Testament in Philippians 3 – here we have Paul who was a very proud man, a strict pharisee. He was on a mission to get rid of the Christian church but he made that amazing statement in Philippians:
But Christ has shown me that what I once thought was valuable is worthless. I have given up everything else and count it all as garbage. All I want is Christ. Nothing is as wonderful as knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:7-9).
So for Paul, and for many others down through the years the jigsaw is complete; when they discover Jesus, the pieces fit together.
If something is meant to be in your life, it will come together naturally. Do you believe that? If you believe in God then you will believe God will take care of you even when things are not going well. You might need to take a break and just stop. Everything will look different when you come back – perhaps it’s a holiday you need.
The bigger picture
We need to look at the big picture in life. Getting hung up on those minor pieces in life – the minor irritations – only lead to frustration. Perseverance is a big thing because every important puzzle, whether it’s big or small, came together bit by bit, piece by piece. That’s what your life and mine is like – day by day.
When one spot stops working, move to another. People that do jigsaw puzzles like my wife is able to move around and then come back to it later. Variety is the spice of life. There are different colours and patterns, the harder the jigsaw puzzle is, I guess the bigger that is. You might sit down with the kids to enjoy a puzzle, while working together. Working together can make any task fun.
What about the boundaries? Sometimes getting the boundaries right with a puzzle is the way to start – it gives some sort of order. Don’t be afraid to try different combinations; that’s true in life. There are things and surprises along the way that we sometimes know nothing about. Even celebrating the success, and when you come to the end of the jigsaw, what a time to celebrate that.

Anything worth nothing takes time and effort. Many people wonder, What is life about? They look at this big picture and become puzzled. And to them, life is nothing but one big jigsaw puzzle.
The missing piece
Every piece fits together, even if there’s going to be a missing piece, if you can find that missing piece. And what I’m saying is that Jesus Christ is that missing piece. The Bible says in John 8:32, “You will know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.”
Where is that missing piece?
People think, If I work hard I’ll find it or in relationships but there is nothing on this earth that is the real solution. Man has been in search of God since the prehistoric era. Do you know that today there is something like 18,000 religions in the world, but there are still many puzzles around the world that haven’t been solved. Alexander the Great thought he conquered the entire world, yet he was frustrated because he didn’t have one more land to conquer.
I want to suggest that Jesus himself is that missing piece – without Jesus your life is an incomplete picture. He can replace sometimes the feeling of emptiness and unhappiness. He makes life meaningful. I’m suggesting that Jesus is the ultimate truth. As the Bible says, when we find Jesus, we find truth.
Thank you Lord, that life need not become a jigsaw just as we put Jesus at the main centre of our puzzle. Thank you Lord that you bring it all together. Amen.
