Knowing Our Place — A LifeWords Devotion

Blessed are the meek,
    for they will inherit the earth. (NIV)

The world sometimes feels full of people who are full of themselves. They thrust themselves into the limelight, boasting about being king of the castle, famous simply for being famous. Their number one priority is looking after number one.

Jesus doesn’t want us to be anything like that. He wants us to know our place. Which isn’t seeing ourselves as miserable and worthless wretches, or demeaning ourselves and calling it humility. We do have value, we do matter, we are to take good care of ourselves. But we are not to consider ourselves as the centre of the universe, demanding all our dreams come true or all our wishes and requests are granted.

He calls us to be meek, which is so often seen as a term of weakness and timidity. Then again, Moses was called the meekest man on earth and he was no pushover. A meek person doesn’t throw their weight around and regard the world as revolving around them. We matter, but we don’t matter most.

And the paradox is that such people actually end up inheriting the earth. Knowing our proper place here and now leads to us enjoying our promised place in the perfect presence of God forever. Or in Jesus’ later words, the last will be first.
