It’s Not Fair — A LifeWords Devotion

It seems the Bible tells us two things about fairness and justice. On the one hand, God is fair and just. On the other hand, life is not fair and justice is not always done.

We can sympathise with Job who suffered unjustly while noting that others who were far away from God and his righteousness seemed to prosper. Some people seem to get away with wickedness while those who try to do the right thing get nothing but trouble.
We need to give up any notion in our minds that life is fair. Of course, there is such a thing as fairness and justice, and we do see them in practice. But justice and fairness are not universal and it can appear that they evaporate in certain circumstances. Unjust and unfair things will inevitably happen to us.

Followers of Jesus believe that this is because our world itself is twisted out of shape. Things are not as our fair and just God wants them to be. One day he will put all things right and all will be well in the new heavens and new earth. Till then, like Job and Jesus we experience unfairness and injustice. And yet with a promise of divine companionship and sustenance.
In our often unfair and unjust world, we cling to this hope of the ultimate triumph of a fair and just God.
