That’s a wonderful thought—the fact that God says he created you for his glory means that your life is important and significant to God himself! Think about that for a moment; don’t let this concept enter into one ear and travel out your other ear, without allowing it to move through your heart. It really does mean you are significant and important to God! Proverbs 3:6 says, “Seek his will in all you do, and he will direct your paths.”

God Can Fill Our Empty Hearts to Overflowing

When we are not living for the purpose that God has created us to live for, we feel incomplete and restless, never able to put our finger on why there is always something that seems to be ‘missing’ in our lives. The Bible tells us that the reason we feel like this is because God has made us for the primary purpose of having a relationship with him, and that all other aspects of our lives are to flow out of our relationship with God, and his purpose for our lives.

When we are not making our relationship with God the most important part of our life, we will feel empty and alone inside. It is like we are a car driving through life with an almost empty petrol tank. We have just enough in our tank to get us by and to get us from point A to point B, but we never have our tank filled, and ultimately we feel an empty void deep within us. God is like our own personal petrol station.

He wants to fill our tanks so that everywhere we go, we can travel through life on a full tank with him. When we choose God, he fills our empty hearts to overflowing, so that we are able to live life with a full tank. What happens when we fill our petrol or gas tank up? Our tanks are no longer running on empty! So too is this the case with our hearts. When we allow God to come in and fill us with his love, we will no longer feel like we have an empty void that needs filling.

In fact, the Bible says that the moment we place our hope in Jesus, he will not disappoint us. It says in Romans 5:5, “Because the love of God will be poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.” Meaning, when we get right with God by asking Jesus to be our Lord and Saviour, he rewards us by giving us incredible ‘hope’ in life, and he fills the empty void in our hearts and lives. The way that God does this is by ‘pouring his love‘ into our empty hearts, so that our hearts will be filled with hope and love! There is nothing in the entire world that gives us this kind of promise, and then backs it up by taking that void away.

God Placed Eternity in Our Hearts

Here are the words of Jesus in Matthew 6:33: “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Just as a square peg cannot fill a round hole, neither can the ‘God-shaped hole’ inside each of us be filled by anyone or anything other than God. Only through a personal relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ can the ‘God-shaped hole’ be filled and the desire for eternity fulfilled.

It was the Preacher in Ecclesiastes 3: 11 who put it so well: “God has placed eternity in the hearts of men”. How did he come to that? What did he mean by it? All our hungers are simply hungers that point to the deepest hunger in our lives .We want what our neighbour has because we believe that if we have it, our hunger will be satisfied. When we get what our neighbour has, does that mean we are content? Usually not. We believe that in all of our hungers, when they are filled, we will be satisfied, only to discover that the anticipation is greater than the reality.

We can never be content with what cannot satisfy us. The deepest hunger of our life which expresses itself in other hungers can be met only by God. Jesus in the Gospel of John said:

“Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”

Therefore they said to Him, “What sign will you perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will you do? Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”

Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”

And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” (John 6:27;30-35 – NKJV)

Bread and water fill legitimate hungers, but they point to the deepest hunger in our lives which only Christ can fill. God created us in this way that we will be truly satisfied when he comes into our lives. He wants to live in us through the person of his Son Jesus Christ.
