Don’t pile up treasures on earth, where moth and rust can spoil them and thieves can break in and steal. But keep your treasure in Heaven where there is neither moth nor rust to spoil it and nobody can break in and steal. For wherever your treasure is, you may be certain that your heart will be there too!” (PHILLIPS)
There are rather disturbing statistics from America which indicate those who follow Jesus are not that much different from the general populace when it comes to material pursuits. Those who profess to be Christians seem to have much the same longings in life as anyone else.
Some of that can be explained by the fact we share a common humanity. But it can also reflect the fact that we are conforming to the world, whereas we are urged in Scripture not to be so conformed. We do not march to the beat of a different drum, but follow the crowd.
Perhaps it is because our hearts and minds are not primarily devoted to Jesus. Our faith is something we dabble in. It is not something that essentially shapes our lives. We are pretty much like everyone else, with a bit of religious faith thrown in to give us some sort of chance of life after this one has ended.
There is such a thing today as “the fear of missing out”. We don’t want to miss out on what others are doing and enjoying. So, we go along with what the others are doing and saying. The irony is that in doing so, we miss out on the real satisfaction of following Jesus.
Our desires tell us much about what we treasure. And what we treasure tells us much about the state of our hearts.
Blessings
David
