It has been a great joy to me that after all this time you have shown such interest in my welfare. I don’t mean that you had forgotten me, but up till now you had no opportunity of expressing your concern. Nor do I mean that I have been in actual need, for I have learned to be content, whatever the circumstances may be. I know now how to live when things are difficult and I know how to live when things are prosperous. In general and in particular I have learned the secret of facing either poverty or plenty. I am ready for anything through the strength of the one who lives within me. (PHILLIPS)
The experts warn us against climbing ladders. We might fall and get injured. But there is another danger with ladders that are not physical ladders. There can be a ladder of ambition. We aim to climb that ladder all the way to the top.
There are a couple of dangers in this. One is that we might fail to ask ourselves if what is at the top of the ladder is right for us. And related to that, does climbing that ladder lead to our pushing others aside.
The Bible speaks of contentment, not meaning lack of ambition, not meaning a complacent acceptance of our present circumstances. We can aim for a better life, but be sure to keep on being thankful and trustful in our present life. We can seek change, but be sure to give our present life our full attention and energy. Faith in Jesus involves believing that he can be trusted in all circumstances, and be found by us in each and every situation.
How sad to climb the ladder of ambition simply for the sake of change or in order to wield power. As has been wisely said, “People may spend their whole lives climbing the ladder of success only to find, once they reach the top, that the ladder is leaning against the wrong wall”.
Blessings,
David
