How sad it might be if we saw life as a rather grim, dogged affair of doing our duty. There is a time and place to give ourselves a treat, to enjoy something purely for the sake of that enjoyment. And the same goes in giving treats to others.

Nobody is a nobody

Most of us have reasonable human connections. It is highly unlikely that any of us would suffer such a fate. Even distant relatives could recognise us. Even passing acquaintances might miss us. The thought of having absolutely no human connections is frightening.

If we are suffering we don’t need clichés or simplistic responses. If we are helping those who are suffering there is no obligation on us to provide clear answers. Recall that Job’s comforters were a wonderful and respectful comfort to him—till they opened their mouths.
