New health warnings are set to appear on wine bottles in Australia, but health industry experts claim more industry changes are still needed. At as little as $2 a bottle, or 30 cents per standard drink, they say wine is just too cheap – cheaper even than bottled water! This is partly due to oversupply but also because wine is taxed differently to other alcoholic beverages. This means its becoming the drink of choice for those who drink to get drunk.
Professor Michael Daube is the Director of the McCusker Centre for Action on Alcohol and Youth and he says the current tax system on alcohol is a ‘dog’s breakfast’ and needs to be reformed.
