Good morning. Heading into a new week and at this time each weekday morning we stop and spend some time with God, reading the Bible, listening to what He has to say to us, and then processing it in our hearts and minds. That’s what shapes your life, you know, the things you focus on, think about, allow to shape your mind. They shape your life as well.
Well, this week I want to talk with you about the big rocks of life, building off the picture that has been given many times of having a big tub and trying to fill it up with a bunch of different things. If you put sand in first and then gravel and then stones and then big rocks, you’ll never fit the big rocks in. But if you put the big rocks in first, then you can put the stones around them and shake it, and they’ll fall down the cracks and then the gravel and it falls down and the sand and everything fits in.
And this is the way it is in life. If we just allow the little everyday pressures of life to fill up our lives, so often the most important things in life get left out, right? Wouldn’t you say maybe right now in your life you’re struggling to fit in some of the really big rocks in your life? Well, I want to talk this week with you about the big rocks, and the first one I want to talk to you about is daily time with God.
Daily time with God
Of course we do this each weekday morning, but so important for you to set aside a little time that’s focused, not just while you’re driving or on your way somewhere, but focused time with God. Just open your Bible and let God speak to you with an open heart and then respond to what He’s saying to you.
Let me read you some words from King David in the Psalms. He says to God,
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
I have sworn an oath and confirmed it to keep your righteous rules. I’m severely afflicted. Give me life, O Lord, according to your word. Accept my free will offerings of praise, O Lord, and teach me your rules. I hold my life in my hand continually, but I do not forget your law.

The wicked have laid a snare for me, but I do not stray from your precepts. Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart. I incline my heart to perform your statutes forever to the end.
Well, you see, in King David’s life how closely aligned was his spending time in God’s word and spending time with God Himself.
That’s the way it is for you as well, as you spend time in God’s word listening to His voice in your heart, He speaks to you.
This is why we see so often Jesus Christ Himself during his time on Earth living as a man among us. His relationship with His Father, God in heaven. He was so committed to his daily time with the Father. He was in such demand. People were at his door knocking first thing in the morning. Where is Jesus, wanting to spend time with him, needing his healing touch, wanting to hear his teaching.
And this continued all day. When could Jesus find time with God? Only by getting up early. And he got up early, went away into the wilderness, and spent time with his father. And you too, as you’re building your spiritual life, your time with God will so easily get crowded out, right, so easily squeezed out by the pressures of life and the people around you and even the entertainment that’s all around you in your home.
So how can you spend time with God and keep that big rock in first place in your life? Well, do it first. When you get up in the morning, maybe have your shower to wake up. I know I have to eat some breakfast and then sit down with your Bible and spend some time with God. Don’t put it last in your day, or you’ll run out of time for it. Put it first in your day. Set your mind for the day.
By spending time with God – you won’t be sorry.
