One of my favourite Christian songs is a song that is known, I think to many people – written and sung by Don Moen. The words say:
God will make a way when there seems to be no way. He works in ways we cannot see. He will make a way for me. He will be my guide and hold me closely to His side with love and strength, for each new day He will make a way. His word will still remain. He will do something new today.
Every time I hear that song, it seems to affect me. I just love those words. There’s a song there to think about the words: God will make a way.
Now it could be an awful situation, something frightening, the consequences. You’re called upon to make a decision, and you’re really not sure what to do. But there’s one bit of truth I want to say today, and that is God will turn up in unexpected ways, and he will help you.
Now he has promised to do that, and he will show up in your life when you least expect it, and that’s the amazing thing about our God. He’s a God of love and compassion. He wants the best for you and me, and one of our problems is that we think glib answers or theology statements will help people through, and I’m afraid that’s not really true.
Imagine that you’ve faced the news of a terminal illness. You’ve got 12 months to live, says the specialist. Now what an awful and a shocking statement to hear.
And you don’t want someone saying to you, oh well, you’ve had a good innings, or maybe God wants you early. These kind of statements, they’re glib, they’re hurtful, they’re not very much of a help, are they?
Job from the Old Testament, he knew the tragedy of loss in his life, and friends of his didn’t particularly help him. They wanted to give him answers, and all he wanted really was understanding and compassion, and if we reflect on this, we will see how God sends always, I think in some way or another, people at the right time.
Maybe we don’t recognise them and maybe it takes a while for those people to come through. Church, that’s supposed to be a good place to find support, and many times that does happen. God brought the church in, I think, into the world as a means of helping and encouraging other people.

But we do need to say, look, what do I do when I don’t know where to go, and then we could say, well, I’m not good enough, I don’t measure up, and maybe today I’m talking to you, you feel stuck, you know, that your life is not meant to be perfect, but you’re feeling that you can’t find meaning, and where do you find it? What about within a family, unfortunately there, many families are fractured in family get-togethers, there are underlying hostilities, you know, they’re ready to break out as it were.
And when they do things go wrong. Angry words are said, but God will make a way through that mess if you call on Him.
And that song from Don Moen says that God will make a way, especially when there is no other way. In other words, we hit a brick wall, and what do we do? Where do we turn? How do I find the way out?
I think we’ve got to believe that God knows the way. We may not know, we may not know the beginning to the end, but we can trust Him to reveal that to us, and I want to talk again about this tomorrow. It’s all about embracing God and exercising faith in Him.
Do you actually trust God, and you think to yourself, well, can I really depend on Him? Well, trust is acting on your belief. It’s quite a challenge. It’s about your attitude and taking the first step, and the first step, as always, is usually the most difficult. And then we take the next step. It’s trusting in God. And there’s a lovely verse from Psalm 145 I’d like to read, which says:
Our Lord, everything that you do is kind and thoughtful. You are near to everyone whose prayers are sincere. That’s Psalm 145:17-18.
And then David the psalmist said, You, O Lord, are merciful, you are kind, you’re patient, you’re always loving, you’re good to everyone, and you take care of all your creation.
My wife and I have been in Athens, and we can imagine where Paul stood in Athens, and he spoke this message to the people of this city. This God made the world and everything in it, he said. He’s the Lord of heaven and earth. He doesn’t live in temples built by human hands. He doesn’t need help from anyone. He gives life. He gives breath and everything else to all people.
God’s done this so that we will look for Him. We’ll reach out and find Him. God is not far from any of us. He gives us the power to live and move. We are His children.
Let’s Pray
Thank you, dear Lord, that you do make a way. Make it clear and plain for us today. Amen.
