Psalm 19:14

May the words of my mouth
and the meditation of my heart
         be pleasing to you,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. (NLT)

Our words can be weapons of warfare or heralds of healing. A sentence or two can make someone’s day or break someone’s heart. Many of us can testify to the power of words to build us up or bring us down. And the one person may be the source of each of those types of words.

The words of our mouths do not just spring up from nowhere. Words don’t occur in a vacuum. They arise from our hearts. If our hearts are toxic so will be our words. If our hearts are warm so too will be our words. So not much use just ‘biting our tongues’ or exercising heroic self-control. Better to attend to our hearts.

Our words are expressions of our deepest selves, our fears and insecurities, our delights and desires. Jesus has been described as God’s living ‘Word’. Not so much a written word, though the Bible is also called the Word of God. Jesus is God, walking, talking, breathing deity. He is the fullest expression of God.

Jesus is not only the Word of God but speaks words from God. They are encouraging and true words because they spring from a divine heart of love. We cannot perfectly speak and act as he did. We can, however, resolve to allow him to so change our hearts that our words will not leave a wake of woundedness but a legacy of love.

Blessings
David
