Good morning.

You know, as you start a day, it’s important to have an idea of what your day is about, what you’re doing today, to have some objectives. It’s hard to do that if you don’t know what your life’s about, where you’re going, what your work means, what your day means.

We’re talking about the foundations you build your life on, ultimate truth.

There’s nothing like life with God at the center of it, so we want to start this morning, and we’re asking the question all this week. What is truth?

It’s a deep question, and it’s a question that shapes your life when you start to answer it. Yesterday we looked at Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, when he was judging Jesus and ended up releasing Jesus to the Jews to be crucified.

He asked Jesus the question, What is truth? And Jesus said, Well, my whole life is about truth. It’s why I came to bear witness to the truth. And he referred to everyone who is of the truth. Well, that’s what we want in our lives, isn’t it, to be of the truth, for our lives to be deeper than the surface, for our actions to have meaning behind them.

What is truth? That question that Pilate asked.

You know, in this sense, there’s a difference between truth and a statement of true fact, right?

So there are facts about science in this world, gravity, you know, the magnetic forces in the world, all of these things, those are true facts, but that’s not what we mean. It’s not what Pilate meant when he said, What is truth?

Here we’re talking about the foundations you build your life on, what you might call ultimate truth.

In John chapter 14 verse 6, Jesus answered a question that his disciple Thomas asked him. Thomas said, as Jesus started to talk about going away, talking about his death, and then his return to the Father in heaven.

Thomas said, Lord, we don’t know where you’re going, and how can we know the way?

And Jesus answered, Thomas, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to God the Father except through me.

Well, what are the foundations you are building your life on? What is the truth? Jesus said in Matthew chapter 7, starting in verse 24, He said, Everyone who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the floods came, the winds blew and beat on the house, and it did not fall because it had been founded on the rock.

Everyone who hears these words of mine does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The same storm came and the house crashed to the ground.

Well, I want to say to you, if your inner life is turning out to be a mess, you need to look at your foundations.

Are you building your life around your relationship with Jesus and around God’s word?

Don’t keep building your life the way you have been building it and then somehow hope the outcome is going to change. That’s not how it works. You have to go back to the foundations. I am the truth, Jesus said. What foundations are you building your life on? What truth?

If your truth that you’re building your life on is not resulting in what you thought it would result in. Go back to the truth and say, is there a different foundation that I need in my life? Jesus Christ brings the foundation to your life that lets you build your life solidly, in a way that is meaningful.

Even if you are a Christian, it doesn’t mean you’re building your life on the foundation of Jesus Christ. You need to put Him in the center of your life. Listen to Him, obey Him, honor Him in your life, and watch God changing your life.
