Money Problems — A LifeWords Devotion

Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness! The more you have, the more people come to help you spend it. So what good is wealth—except perhaps to watch it slip through your fingers! (NLT)

We hear some people express a longing to win the lottery or inherit a fortune. Life would be so much better, things would start falling into place if only the money would come in. Then again, we hear of people who have come into money and who squander it, who find that it does not bring the happy fulfilment they anticipated.

Our text reminds us that, for all its admitted value, it has its limits. Money can do us and others a lot of good. But if seen as end in itself it usually leads to greed or fear. Greed in wanting more, fear in respect to the possibility of losing it.

We are not to despise money or condemn those who have it—after all, most of us do have money and qualify as being relatively rich. In its proper place it has its place. As a life pursuit it is destructive of personal integrity and compassion for the poor and needy.

We were made for more than just the accumulation of wealth, however desirable that might be. It is very possible to be materially rich and personally poor. As the saying goes, some people are so poor that all they have is money.
