19       The Sovereign Lord is my strength!
He makes me as surefooted as a deer,
able to tread upon the heights. (NLT)

Either in the zoo or in the wild,we may have observed mountain goats clambering over rocky landscapes, precariously balanced alongside steep falls. We reckon we could never do anything like that. Those goats are made in such a way that they can handle such apparently dangerous situations.

This is the picture the prophet is painting at the end of his book which is about how the people of God can remain faithful to God when all around seems to spell disaster. The mountain slopes seem unable to support us. Any moment now we will plunge over the precipice to our doom. There seems no escape from this inhospitable landscape.

And the word of the prophet is not about transforming these unpromising granite outcrops into lush green meadows. It is about our being able to live in the threatening landscape that confronts us. We are, through the powerful presence of God,to be surefooted as mountain goats are in such places. This is not our comfortable habitat and nor are we naturally equipped to survive in it.

But our God equips us to do so. He doesn’t force us into fatally dangerous territory there to fall to our death. He enables us to secure footholds through believing he is with us and can sustain us. We may long for the lush meadows, but for now the rocky outcrops may have to do. Even then,we are secure in him.
