Read Galatians 6:1-3

1 Dear brothers and sisters,if another believer is overcome by some sin,you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. 2 Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. 3 If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important. (NLT)

When it comes to caring for others we can do one of two things. We can bring God to people or play God with people. If someone is in need we can decide to do something about it. What we decide to do might be to exert some control over that person: use it as an opportunity to make them see things our way. We enter their lives as deputy Messiahs, sorting them out, playing God.

Our text today warns against that. Only those who have a godly, humble and gentle spirit can do the delicate and demanding job of helping someone get back on track. The proud and the angry and the controlling will only try to impose themselves on others. They care more for their ministry of ‘helping’ than for the person being helped.

Those who help others get back on track need to be well aware of their own tendency to go off track themselves. This means they will not offer quick fixes, not convey some real or imagined superiority. They come alongside not as elite experts but as fellow travellers.

The best helpers are those who know their own need of help.
