Read Psalm 62:1-2

1      Truly my soul finds rest in God;
            my salvation comes from him.
2      Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
            he is my fortress,I will never be shaken. (NIV)

Our faith journey is full of words. We can be overloaded with sermons,books,lectures,and of course emailed reflections! Surrounded by all these words,it can be good for us to cut through it all and focus on just one or two words. Such words guide us through our days,giving us our marching orders,providing our first waking thoughts and our bedtime reflection.

Many of us do this already: we have Bible texts or words put up in places where they grab our attention. Many of us will change those key words occasionally as we enter new seasons along the way. But the highlighted words are like beacons that guide us through dark places and remind us of what remains true when other things are so confusing.

The text today is one such text for me. I resonate with the theme of rest for the soul,a readiness to surrender concerns,to let go of what entraps or discourages me. I cling to the idea of a rock,expressing solid ground. And as one who can easily be shaken I am grateful for the picture of a fortress which withstands the circumstances which unsettle me.

The Spirit of God is only too ready to give us such a word or words. The Psalms might be a good place to start as they are so expressive of the confusions in our human life. Amongst all our many words,may we find a word which gets to the heart of our human condition and thereby transforms it.
