Read Psalm 139:1-6
1 O Lord,you have examined my heart
and know everything about me.
2 You know when I sit down or stand up.
You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.
3 You see me when I travel
and when I rest at home.
You know everything I do.
4 You know what I am going to say
even before I say it,Lord.
5 You go before me and follow me.
You place your hand of blessing on my head.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too great for me to understand! (NLT)
It has been said that your best friend is someone who knows all about you and who is your friend all the same. It is true that we have secrets that might cause even our friends to wonder about us. It is true no other human being understands us utterly: we don’t even understand ourselves.
Not so with our God. We have no secrets from him. He knows the worst in us and yet loves us. He can see the good in us that others might not grasp. He knows our past, present, and future. Nothing we may do will disillusion him. He will never be shocked by us. He will never give up on us.
Our knowing God,vital as it is,remains secondary to God knowing us. Our knowledge of him is necessarily imperfect and incomplete. His knowledge of us is realistic, comprehensive, and always shaped by love.
We rightly fear those who would pry into our lives and humiliate or hurt or destroy us. The world has known its ‘big brothers’ who want to control us for their own ends. Thankfully, the God who knows us utterly loves us utterly. He is no ‘big brother’ but a gracious and accepting father.
