The dance of faith and hope

Read Hebrews 11:1

Now faith means putting our full confidence in the things we hope for,it means being certain of things we cannot see. (JBP)

Our life of following Jesus is lived out in a ‘now and not yet’ landscape. We experience now the blessings of God but also the pain and sorrow of living in an out-of-shape world. We experience the presence of God now but that presence is often blurred or distorted by our waywardness. We get some delightful answers to some prayers whilst others seem to bounce off the ceiling.

We are people who live in hope. Not some sort of religious wishful thinking, but rather a confidence that one day all will be put right. A confidence that God is good even if we don’t feel or sense or see the goodness of God. A confidence that our prayers are heard even if we can’t discern the nature of God’s response to them.

We are bound to live in hope because while God has inaugurated his kingdom or his rule,he hasn’t as yet made it complete and perfect. We only have a taste of heaven, not the whole lot. And so we are not only people of hope but of faith. We need faith to maintain our hope that what has been promised will one day come to be.

Someone once wrote that hope is hearing the melody of the future; faith is dancing to that tune.
