An anchor in the storm

Read Hebrews 6:19-20

19 This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary. 20 Jesus has already gone in there for us. He has become our eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek. (NLT)

When we are faced with troubles of any sort we have a few options. We can simply become overwhelmed by them and give up. We can strive with all our might to manage life so the troubles go away, either by frantic activity or by stubborn denial. Neither of these options really works.

So a third option is necessary. We find some sort of security in the midst of trouble. We don’t give in,we don’t engage in futile struggle or determined denial. We face the trouble and trust that we will be sustained in it. This is a true Christian option because it recognises that there is a source of security.

The text today describes such security as an anchor. It conjures up pictures of a ship riding out a storm. The ship can’t stop the storm raging, but it need not sink or founder because it is securely anchored.

Our anchor is found in the constant goodness of Jesus,in the faithfulness of God. We have proof of all this in the fact that Jesus has lived, died, and risen again for our sake. God is on our side,Jesus intercedes for us. Storms come and go,but the anchor remains.
