Read Colossians 4:5-6
5 Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone. (NLT)
When confronted with those who we believe are on the wrong track spiritually,we can become rather defensive and thus counterattack. We feel the need to win the argument, correct the errors,be in control.
In such cases, our faith has become like a fortress. We are like insecure warriors who feel the need to overcome the enemy in order to feel safe. And so,contrary to Paul’s counsel,we are not always gracious or wise. We are too much under threat for all that.
Better to see our faith as a home rather than a fortress. We can come and go from this home, meeting others, engaging with them-and when needed defending our faith. But we do so realising we are safe and secure in our own spiritual home. We become gracious and wise companions and acquaintances rather than fearsome guard dogs.
If we live in fortresses we will see others as enemies and ourselves under threat. If we live in a home we can see others as welcome visitors and ourselves as secure within it. May our Christian faith be such a warm and welcome home rather than a fearful and forbidding fortress.
