Sin management

Read Proverbs 28:13-14

13 People who conceal their sins will not prosper,
but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.

14 Blessed are those who fear to do wrong,

but the stubborn are headed for serious trouble. (NLT)

‘Sin’ is our tendency to fall short of God’s standards; going our own way independently of him. There are four ways we can deal with it,three of which might be termed ‘sin management’.

One way is to deny the reality of sin or minimise it. Of course we do wrong, but we are better than most and we are sincere in wanting to be good. Others may not even make that admission but rather treat sin as a normal way of life: looking after ‘number one’ is the name of the game.

Another way is the way of moral education. We admit our shortcomings and try extra hard to be good. We give ourselves and others stern lectures about trying our best and being true to ourselves.

Then there is the way of self-punishment. We get overwhelmed by our imperfections and figure we are worthless creatures who deserve all the punishment that some deity can dish out,or that we can serve on ourselves.

The only way to truly deal with sin, rather than try to manage it,is to confess it to God and fling ourselves on his mercy. Seek his help in going his way. Denial, trying hard, punishment, won’t work. The only remedy for the infection of sin is the medicine of God’s healing grace.
