Read Exodus 20:22-23

22 And the LORD said to Moses,”Say this to the people of Israel: You saw for yourselves that I spoke to you from heaven. 23 Remember, you must not make any idols of silver or gold to rival me. (NLT)

Years ago, some bright sparks decided to cash in on the Disney creation,Mickey Mouse. Some made watches with Mickey Mouse faces. They were not very good watches. Ever since, shoddy goods have been labelled ‘Mickey Mouse’. They are not the real thing, they don’t work well.

This text warns us against Mickey Mouse gods. Self-made things which don’t work and aren’t genuine. We certainly don’t bow down to silver-and-gold idols nowadays but we can have false imaginings in regards to God. Lots of people claim to believe in God but it is too often a deity of their own imagination, the God they reckon fits in with their life goals.

Even those who claim to be Christians can twist God. Our upbringing can distort our view of God. An over-indulgent or harsh father can shape our understanding of God. We need a healthy dose of Scripture to get things right. And even then we need to be careful to look at the whole of Scripture not just the bits that appeal to us.

Above all,we see God in Jesus. He is the ultimate antidote to such false imaginings. Confronted with the reality of Jesus, why would we ever settle for a second-best substitute?
