Read 1 Corinthians 3:5-9
5 After all,who is Apollos? Who is Paul? We are only God’s servants through whom you believed the Good News. Each of us did the work the Lord gave us. 6 I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it,but it was God who made it grow. 7 It’s not important who does the planting,or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow. 8 The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work. 9 For we are both God’s workers. And you are God’s field. You are God’s building. (NLT)
When we look back on our lives we can probably identify a number of people who were influential in our becoming who we are today. Quite likely, they were diverse people who played a distinctive part. One helped in one way, another helped in another way. Pretty much as Paul explains things to the Corinthians who were inclined to get carried away with personality cults.
While some might say that a particular individual led them to Christ,it is probable others also played some part. Some might have sown a seed which only later fertilised. Different people help us through different seasons of life. One year they are virtually indispensable and the next year they might have little to do with us. God uses different people at different times to accomplish different purposes.
And yet behind it all there is just one purpose: becoming more like Jesus, the model of perfect humanity. And behind it all, there is God who works in us in every season and through every individual he sends across our paths.
Give thanks to God regularly for all who have played a part in your life in Christ. (Even better, tell them directly!). But give thanks to God himself as the great constant, the one who is behind the many.
