Read Isaiah 49:14-16
14 Yet Jerusalem says,”The LORD has deserted us;
the Lord has forgotten us.”
15 “Never! Can a mother forget her nursing child?
Can she feel no love for the child she has borne?
But even if that were possible,
I would not forget you!
16 See,I have written your name on the palms of my hands.
Always in my mind is a picture of Jerusalem’s walls in ruins. (NLT)
We so easily forget things. Going to a shop to buy something and forgetting what that ‘something’ is. Forgetting to cancel the appointment or renewing the subscription. We have so much on our minds that it is easy to forget all the things we mean to do. We can even forget to pray for others even when we have promised them we will do so.
When we pray to God,we need to remember he doesn’t forget. God has the capacity that we humans lack. He can be mindful of everything and everyone all at the same time. So when we bring something or someone to him in prayer,we can be sure it won’t slip his mind. When we have unburdened ourselves on him,we have no need to go back and back to him to remind him of what we have shared.
True,out of sheer love and care we bring people and things to him regularly: we don’t pray for those we love just once. But if we do pray repeatedly for the same things,it is not because we figure God may have forgotten. And in some anxiety-laden circumstances,it is best to simply surrender those circumstances to God and leave them with him rather than worry about them under the guise of persistent prayer.
Our God never forgets what we bring to him. We have no need to prod his memory by going over and over our needs with him. Let him take care of our needs so we can take care of living freely and gladly for him.
