Curries are heavyweights of the culinary world, a feast for the eyes, nose and the tastebuds. If that wasn’t enough, they also have the power to transform lives by lifting communities out of poverty.
The Great Australian Curry is an initiative run by Opportunity International, which encourages Aussies to get together with family, friends or colleagues to share in a curry – and raise funds for the work of Opportunity, who provide microloans to women across Asia to build their own businesses and support their families. Gradually, the loan is then repaid and recycled for other families to use – creating a sustainable model of empowerment.
“Mums are often at home looking after their kids, and may not be able to get a job, so they often have capacity to start a small business,” Kieran Johnson, Opportunity International State Manager for WA & SA, told Hope Drive.
“Money in the hands of a woman gets spent more so on her family and kids.
“To end poverty, if we put money in the hands of a woman, there’s a much better chance to make some sustainable change.”
