Listen: Foodbank NSW & ACT CEO John Robertson tells Hope Afternoons Ben McEachen the most stark statistic from the Foodbank Hunger Report 2021 is that 1.2 million Australian children are living without enough food

Sadly, the Foodbank Hunger Report 2021 has uncovered that one in three Australians who are struggling to meet their food needs “had never experienced food insecurity prior to the pandemic”.
But there is a way to help. Hope 103.2 has, once again, partnered with Foodbank NSW & ACT for our Unite in Hope 2021 Appeal, in order to support those who have continued to support us through what has been an overwhelming and tough past two years.
Your gift of $365 to Unite in Hope will provide a practical gift to a family in need this Christmas
Foodbank NSW & ACT’s CEO, John Robertson says the report highlights that the pandemic continues to deliver challenges that are exacerbating pre-existing issues in our community.
“The issue of putting food on the table in Australia has never been more prominent than it is right now. The report highlights that food insecurity is no longer restricted to the ‘obvious’ vulnerability groups in the community who were already struggling before COVID-19, such as the homeless and the unemployed,” Mr Robertson said.
“The key findings in this report are indeed confronting, but we can’t fix a problem we don’t understand or acknowledge. Although Foodbank is now providing food relief to a record one million people a month across the country, we know many experiencing hardship feel there are others worse off and don’t ask for help. That is heartbreaking to know, and if there is one thing I can stress, it’s that there is no shame in asking for help, and in fact, it’s exactly what we’re here for. Life happens to us all, and we’re here for everyone.”

Alanna’s story
Alanna was helped out by Foodbank when she had to take in five children, who unexpectedly lost their father. Without Alanna’s support, the children would have been divided into foster homes. So, with three kids of her own, she credited Foodbank’s assistance in helping her provide enough food for eight kids.
