You may have heard in the news about an email scam that went around the world almost immediately after the Haiti Earthquake.
It was a fake email that appeared to be from United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), urgently seeking donations for bogus charities. The BBC did an investigation that uncovered some of the criminal gangs behind it.
While it’s shocking, really it’s just a small blip in an epidemic of cyber crime that’s been going on for years now. Brett Christensen runs an Australian website called Hoax-Slayer, which exposes these kinds of scams; he spoke to Open House about how you might be affected.
