In the middle of the US state of Alaska, is a little town called North Pole, with a tourism industry based around the theme of Christmas. It boasts a Santa Claus House, a St Nicholas Catholic Church, year-round Chrissy decorations, and street names like Snowman Lane, Santa Claus Lane, and Holiday Road. This little town is the centre of the “Greater North Pole” district, home to over 30,000 residents.
Well if you’ve ever written a letter to Santa and put it in the letterbox, chances are that this is where it’s ended up. Every year since 1954, the town has been receiving thousands of letters addressed to Santa, with volunteers sending off replies, to children all around the world.
But the program has been jeopardised, at least in the USA, because of financial constraints and privacy concerns.
